I've been fascinated by tile work for as long as I have consciously recognized inspirations as an artist. I love how tiles, mosaics and quilts are composed of smaller pieces that form the larger whole. After working in a tile format for several years, I began folding the sides of the tiles down to create a bit more volume, which later evolved into the very structural slab-built 'box' forms that I still find great satisfaction in creating. Sometimes they provide a canvas for a myriad of patterned and intricate surfaces, while at other times, that pattern is disrupted with ravines, crevices or other geologic elements.
